HIGHWAYS MATTERS.

A meeting of ratepayers in No. 3 (Foxton) Ward of the Manawatu Highways District was held at the Foxton Athensßum on Tuesday evening last. There was a fair attendance, settlers being present from all parts of the district, and Mr Fenton was voted to the chair. The Warden (Mr Macpherson) attended, and explained briefly various matters connected with the Board. He also pointed out that in the statement given him, and of which we recently, published an abstract, some £80 had been wrongly charged to Foxton Ward, whereas it should in justice have been debited to Carnarvon. The effect of this would be to give Foxton a ciedit balance of £250, instead of JU7O. The following resolutions were passed : — Proposed by Mr Guerin, seconded by Mr H. Wilson, "That in the opinion of this meeting, it would be advisable to obtain the formation of a separate Highways Board for the district comprised in No. 8 Ward of the Manawatu Highways Board." Carried. Proposed by Mr H. Wilson, seconded by Mr S. Howan, " That Messrs M'Pherson, Purcell, Wilson, and Howan be appointed a Committee to canvass the Ward with the above- object, and to report to a meeting to be held at the Athenamui on January 3." Carried. The spirit of the meeting was very determined. It is probable a deputation will be appointed to attend the Board meeting to take place on January 5. The deputation, if appointed, will urge on the Board the just claims of the district, and, should no satisfaction be received, the petition for separation will be at once forwarded to Wellington, with a request that the Government will deduct from the next subsidy payment ,the amount due to Foxton. We trust, however, it will not be necessary to resort to such extreme measures. The claims of Foxton are acknowledged to be just and reasonable, and it is to be hoped the Board will adopt an honorable and conciliatory attitude. •
