Singleton, with his family, arrived a few months ago from Wellington, and either purchased or rented a farm at Pokeno, residing meanwhile with his family in Symond street. Yesterday he had been drinking about the town, and fell m with Denham. On discovering his loss he at once informed the police, and tho detectives speedily effected the arrest of the suspected [ individual. I Newman, one of the defeated candidates for Oity West, has filed a i petition against Wallis aud Hurst for alleged bribery, corruption, and illegal practices in the late election. He has given surety, himself in .£2OO, and two sureties of £100 each, to prosecute the petition. The potition wenfc to Wellington in the Taiaroa this morning, accompanied by an affidavit of Whitaker and Russell, solicitors. Grahamstown, Tuesday. The facts elicited were substantially the same as at the inquest. The inquest on Mrs Smith, who died iv the hospital from injuries received ou Saturday last, will be^held to«>morrow.
