OTAKI HIGHWAYS BOARD.

• ♦ The Board met at the office on Monday last, September 29. Present — Mossrs Simcox (Ch airman), Hadfield, Kebbell, M'Crae, and Dr Hewson. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. FINANCIAL The long delay shown by the Manawatu Highways Board in settling the accounts between the two Boards was referred to, and fche following resolution was proposed by Mr Kebbell and seconded by Mr Hadfield — "That the Chairman do again write to tho Ohairman of the Manawatu Highways Board, and re quest an immediate set -lament of the accounfc due to the Ofcaki Highways Board." Carried. DRAINAGE AT OTAKI. The vexed question of drainage again came up for discussion, and the following resolutions dealing with the matter, were carried : — (1.) Proposed by Mr Hadfield, and seconded by Dr Hewson, " That the County Council be requested to instruct its Engineer to report more fully on the causes of the occasional accumulation of water on the County roads 'and land adjoining iv the township of Ofcaki, and ascertain if the recent partial flooding of tho roads and sections is occasioned by no culvoijta being provided in tho road lp .-"ly constructed by the Council ay through the want of extra ctttverts, or defects in those existing in; that portion of the main road -Wffiing' through the township of (2.) Proposed by Mr Kebbell, and seconded by Mr Hadfield, "That Messrs Hadfield, Hewson, M'Crae, and the Chairman be appointed a Committeo to enquire as to which Creek may be considered as the natural outlet for the drainage of that pait of Otaki near the cross-roads, and to devise means in conjunction "with the residents to carry off the stagnant water alongside the road leading to Mr Death : s premises, if necessary." SHIFTING SANS. The following resolution was proposed by Mr Hadfield and seconded by Mr Kebbell : " That it is expedient to take immediatt steps to stay the drifting sands, and reclaim them a s far as possible, within the Otaki Highways district ; and with this object a committee bo formed, consist- . ing of Messrs Davies, Kebbell, Sim*; cox, Udy, Dr Hewson, and the mover, to inquire into the matter, f and ascertain to what extent the land has been devastated by shifting sands eince the occupation of tho district by the Europeans, and which are the most suitable grasses, and plants, in such works of reclamation. The Committee to report to the Board when it has full iaformation on the subject." Carried. One account, amounting to !Gs, was passed. The nexfc meeting of the Board will be held on Monday, October 27, at 2 p.m.
