IMPOUNDING STO CK.

TO THE EDITOR OP THE MANAWATU HERALD. Sin — A writer in your paper of Septem* ber 12, signing himself " One of the Sufferers," attacks me in my public capacity of County Councillor, and strives to impute great blame, inasmuch as I have plenty of money and am a County Councillor. It waft a pity that he did not get.dat^s and particulars from the several parties who told him of my shortcomings. He Would have made a much better case. But I deny the charge in toto, and reply that there ate few who aro more completely or better fenced 4 than I am, in respect both of Mr Lack- ■[ worthy's property and my own. ~^r First, he Bays the question of how soon < the owner of land da to be obliged to fence turns upon his having plenty of money or otherwise. I am, to suit the '* Sufferer'B " case, supposed to be so far fortunate. If the "Sufferer" is really poor, I am } sorry for him, and hope he wilt soon make the needful rise to enable him to fence. But, ' Sir, you will find in most districts, and to which Foxton is not an exception, a class of plunderers. They are idle, lazy, and imprudent, and the stock they own are allowed to stray, to the annoyance and loss of the industrious. So you see there are two kinds of " sufferers " — the unfenced sohemer and the fonced toiler, and as a rule prosperous settler. I take the side of tho latter, and whether as County Councillor, Justice of ' the Peace, or private citizen, I will do my' best, both to frame and administer the law which shall Jay the lash on the right back. A norn de plume always makes one hazard a guess as to who is the writer. In this case I think I know him, and, further, do not believe he is an owner of stock, but a mere adventurer ; and if it is the individual that I suppose, he may believe me that had I the plenty of money ho credits me with, I would cheerfully pay his passage to India, where he would find a people that would cordially join him in Btabbing in the dark. I am, &c , , . „......„« John: iff 1 . gWrb. Carnarvon, September H, 1879.
