A FEW OBSERVATIONS.

TO THE EDITOIt OF THE MANAWATU HEBAID ' Sir -It strikes me that you have a very poor opinion of the population of this liding, as quite two tbiida of the settlers are not of your opinion re the conduct of Mr Purcell as a constable, and I consider that you have offered some 50 or 60 of the settlers a direct insult' by the expression of your opinion, and that it is vecy bad taste on your part to briug up a Bubjoct upon which there have been so many disputes. But as Mr Purcell has left the Force, I for one am satisfied. I respect Mr Purcell as a settler, and believe he wili prove hinißjßlf to be a good one. -Aud now. Sir, I wish to draw yonr attention to theiirmense qunntities of firewood coming to Foxton by train, to the order of two or three of those men who prof ess to be watching the interests of Foyton, and fostering the growth of the township. One of those persons does not only propose getting sufficient for his own consumption, but to suf ply the township with this article. Now this is causing our own woodcutters to leave the place for Palmerston, where they will get work to cut firewood for Foxton, as they say that they cannot pell their wood if they cut it here, although it c\n b&, sold cheaper than that which comes from.Palmeraton. ■ J . lam, &c, , Wl^A Foxton, September 20. ■ [Our correspondent was evidently bilious when he wrote. Surely, when maVinalA"such a grave charge against v*, "lie shoultL * not have been afraid to put his name to his y letter. We suppose the Resident Magistrate has also shown bad taste, and offered a direct insult to the people of Foxton, becaueo he expressed the opinion that Mr Puroell had as a constable done his duty ! From the animus our correspondent shows, we fear he must be one of those to whom we referred when we said : — " The conscisn-s ■ tious discharge of his duties of necessity r. brings a police officer into ill odour with a certain portion of the community."— Ed. M. Hekald.]
