NATIVE DISPUTE NEAR FOXTON.

* — ■ — : — -♦ — . On Thursday evening last, information ■was brought iutp Foxton to the effect that a dispute at Poiroutawhao between Borne natives had assumed a rather serious aspect. It will be remembered that some few months ago a dispute .took r place amongst the, same lot of natives, regarding tho surrey and subdivision of the land, when it was agreed to await the decision of the Court, es to the settlement. of the claims. Some few days ago, however,, a half caste named Tata'na, who claims through his wife a portion of the enclosure held iv common by the Poroutawhap native, began fencing off what he thought was his share. This led to high words, and finding that warnings were disregarded, some of Tamihana Tp Hoea's people seized the fencing wire, and carted it up to the house. Tafana's party, however, were determined to carrj on the work, aud accordingly went in a body to seize the wire, when a. number of people in a wharo near rushed out' upon them with blabs, tomahawks, &c , and threatened to inflict summary punishment if they dared to remove it. Upon this Mr Baker, Native Officer resident at Foxton, was sent for, and we are glad to hear peace was restored, both parties consenting to accept the decision of a rununga. We understand letters h ave been sent to the leading natives throughout the district, inviting them to attend the meeting, which]|will take place at Poroutawhao in a few days.
