Thomas reports— Flour, Adelaide, £15, firm ; colonial, £9 to £9 10s, firm; wheat, milling, 4s Od to 4s 9d ; oats, 3s to 3s 3d ; maize, 4s 3d to 4s 6d ; bran, 9d to Is ; pollard, £6 10s ; potatoes, £4 10s; butter, Is; cheese, 7d; hams, lOd; bacon, 9d, scarce. In replying to a deputation regarding the Seventy Mile Bush road Mr Macandrew Baid the Government not consider any application lor 1 assistance towards maintenance of roads, as they already had applications of similar character amounting to over two hundred thousand pounds, and if they granted one they would require to find a million of money for same purpose. There was only one of two courses — either they must have extensive taxation, or borrow more money. But borrowing more money for maintenance of roads and bridges was out of the question, the present taxation was not sufiicient for the requirements of Government. Therefore, increased taxation would be necessary r and the sooner the people of New Zealand faced the fact they would have to rely on themselves for help the better it would be for the Colony. TAukanga, Thursday, 5 p.m. G. N. Gair, Manager of National Bank, committed suicide at 6 o'clock this morning by shooting himself. No reason can at present be assigned, as he his stated to be solvent. The bullet entered the left temple, and death was instantaneous. Deceased had benn drinking heavily for some time past. A day or two since he asked a gentleman here which was the best place to shoot himself. An inquest may be held this evening. Auckland, Thursday, 8 p.m. It is said that one libel action for certain, and probably two, with heavy damages will be laid against the Hawke's Bay Herald for violent artides attacking Majois Blair and Jackson and Mr Searanche in connection with their transactions with Kingite natives. The body of John Ashley, bush contractor, has been found floating near the Sandspit by his two sons. The Rev. Geo. Brown, pioneer Wesleyan Missionary, is seriously ill at Sydney.
