Ehhata.— We have to apologise to our readers for two absurd errors which oc» curred in the extract article from the Wellington Chronicle, which appeared in our issue of last Tuesday. In « correcting " a proof, the word Foxton was substituted for Falmeraton in one place, and vice versa in another. This correction was overlooked in last issue. FoxroN Local Board.— A meeting of the above Board was held at 3 p.m. on Friday last, at the offices of the Board. Present Messrs Liddell (chairman), Whyte, Cook, and (Jrowther. The minutes of the previous meeting having been read and confirmed, Mr A. J. Whyte proposed, and Mr Cook seconded, that Mr Crowther be Chairman of the Board. This was earned, aod MY Crowther having taken the chair, Mr Liddell retired from the room. Mr A. J. Whyte then handed in his resignation as a Commissioner, and left the meeting. This reduced the number of members present to the chairman and iVIr Cook, and no further business could be done for want of a quorum. Local Boabd Election.— The necessary steps for supplying the vaoanoies in the Local Board, caused by the retirement of Messrs J. W. lLiddell and A. J. Whyte from the Board, have been taken by the Returning. Officer, E. S. Thynne, E sq. The nominations are to be made at the Court House on Thursday nexi, at noon. If necessary, a poll will be taken on the Friday follow-, ing. No person is qualified for the office of Commissiouev unless he shall be rated at an anual rental of £10 at least. Notice is alto given that only those persons who have paid the last rate levied are qualified to vote at the election. At present Dr tfockstrow and Messrs J. A. Pereau and T. Easfcon are spoken of as probable candidates for the vacant offices. We may state the election will be only until September, when a general election takes place. Teachers' Association.— At the ordinary meeting on Saturday, Maroh let, the forenoon was passed in listening to Mr Hueysman's repeating part of his first lecture, this time made more instructive and attractive by the experiments made in illustration of the subject. The principal gases— oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, and carbonic acid were prepared and the chief properties of each shown. The next meeting will take place at Turakina on Saturday next. Motoa School.— On Friday last a tea party was given to the children attending the Motoa School, by the local committee, at the schoolbouae. The youngsters ap-

predated tlw treat vefy ifU"*\. In the I cVeniUjr a dunce was held, but owing to a i riimdr gaining currency lhat in consequence t of the inclement state of the weather it i was to be postponed, the attendance was I not so largo as expected ; btiil several visitois from tdwn attended, and enjoyed a . very .pleasant evening MiSs Gt'aUej the Schdol te4cheri and iiia Hdwe, assisted y soveral gbntlemen; did all they could to pfoiriote tlio cdnitort and amusement of thtise who were present: Progress.— We are pleased to note that the contractor for the Bchptii hart made a beginning with the roof: THdttgll delated b Y the inability bf the Ba\v*mUiers to complete (neir orders, he has not been idle. The studding, joisting, window frames, are all up, and the rafters not only ready for erection but going up. In the course of a few days the new building will show up well. Licensing CpuKt^A meeting df this 1 Eollrt will bo held at Foxton to morrow. The case of Mr Thos. Ensor, who had forgotten to take out a transfer of license for the Junction Hotel, will b 6 heard. Assessment Covkt.— A sitting of this Court will be held to morrow after the Licensing Court business is finished. Afcr. SAINTS'; Fd*Tds.— We notice that the Rev. Mr Newth, who is coming to take charge of Foxton aud Palmeraton, has sent in his resignation of tho curacy he holds in Nelson. It is very probable that the Bishop of Nelson will allow Air Newth to come here without delay. P.S. Obprbyi— Mr Liddell received word yesterday lhat this steamer hud made A ' start from Wellington on Saturday, anil i was awaiting a favorable opportunity at j the Heads to make a start for Foxrou- ■ She thorcfore may be expected to show up at any moment. ! Annual Rate.— A special meeting of j the Otnki Highway Board is cullqd for the , 241-h Martllj fdr tile purpose cf striking the j annual rate. j Mektinq of Creditors.— A meeting of | creditors in the estate of Samuel Cook, of i Foxton, a debtor, will be held at Whyte's i Hotel, on Friday, 14th March, at 7 p.m. Shipping. — On Saturday and Sunday la*t no less than 20 sailing vessels and steamers are ropof ted as having arrived at Wellington) of Which 17 arrived on SatM 1 * day. This is the largest number ot arrival* on any two days on record. The shipping business must be getting brisk at Wellington now. Rifle Championships. — The Championship has been won this year by a young man from Wellington named Ballinger, of the City Rifles, with a score of 191 : Hutchison (Otago), being second with 190 ; and Smith (Otago), third with 189. Gordon, of the Thamas, has taken the Carbine Championship with a score of 192 points^ The shooting hag been very close, and the matches have consequently been most exciting. f hr Hydraiud. — As reported in our last issue, would probably be the case, the new centrifugal pump on the Hydrabad reduced the water on Friday night to about Bft 6in. This is as low as the pump will work, on account of the debris at the bottom of the ship. The leak was discovered to be at the stern of the vessel. All the parts affected are to be covered/with a mixture of clar. and cement, whu£h is expected to do away entirely with the difficulty of the watey Arrangements are now being made to discharge the remainder of the cargo with all convenient speed, and it is hoped that ere long operations for floating the vessel will be complete, and undo? the new management. sanguine expectations aro entertained that this fine vessel will not be left on the Horowhenua beach after all. A New Motto. — The following is extracted from an advertisement in a southern paper. We fully endorse the sentiments conveyed: — Early to bed and early to rise, Your business won't pay if you don't advertise The Railway Question.— The Post of Friday says:— Messrs Sanson and Gower, of the Manawatu County Council, were in town to day, and availed themselves of the opportunity to interview the Hon. Mr Macandrew upon the question of the West Coast railway. They urged that the terminus should be at Foxton, instead of I almerston, pointing out that if this route were adopted Wellington would be directly connected with the country beyond, by the Sandon and Carnarvon Railway, whioh is io be constructed under the District Bailways Act. If Foxton were chosen the line wonld be shortened by some 20 miles, and the present line from Foxton to Balmerston on the other rside of the Gorge, would connect with Palmerston by a route only a few miles longer than if the line were taken direct. On the other hand, if Palmerston were chosen as the terminus, the produce of Foxton and the district beyond would have to be sent over 50 or 60 miles furthei to reach Wellington, causing delay and rnuoh more expense in the carriage of goods and passengers. Mr Macandrew promised to consider the facts placed before him, and to allow due weight to the arguments advanced. The Government would) not finally decide upon the terminus until the fullest information was before them. A Splendid Steamer.— The New Zealand Union Steam Company are getting a large steamer, to be named the Botomahana, built on the Clyde* A contemporary says that the plans provide for a great many two-berth cabins, and the narrow settees generally to be found iv vessels are superceded by commodious sofas extending all round the saloon. The seats at the tables consist of pivot ohaira, similar to those in the Zealandia and Australia, and whioh are much appreciated by the travelling public. On deck there is to be a large " social hall " for gentlemen (non smokers) and ladies, which in to be provided with a piano. In the after part of the ship will be a luxuriously fitted up smokln/ room. On deck there will also bb a large oabin denominated the bridal chamber. This will be for parties on. wedding toura and others who are able and willing to pay the additional rates charged for thin oabin. She will be the largest of the company's steamers, and fitted with engines of the latest pattern, capable of driving her fifteen knots per hour. Naw Bails.— ln the Wellington papers tenders are called for the conveyance of about 681 tons of rails and fastenings, &c, to Foxton. We believe these rails are intended to be used in replacing the light rails at present in use on the line and which are found to be too light for the increasing traffic. B Cricket.— Lord Harris has written to the Christohoroh orioketera expressing regret that the English team will not hare time to visit New Zealand on their present tour, S.S. Huia.— This steamer lost three blades of her propeller through fouling a snag in the Wanganui River on her last trip to that port. Narrow Escape — Another very narrow escape in conneotion with the late fire at Masterton is recorded by the Wairarapa Daily. Mrs Tozri was sleeping with her

Parties requiring any of the above articles will save themselves a lot of trouble by calling and inspecting the immense assortment, which is too gigantic to particularise by advertisement. — [Advt.]
