Nklsok, Monday. In the carbine and rifle matches, North v. South, the carbine was won by the North by 7 points. Gordon (Thames), highest scorer, takes cup for the year. The rifle match was won by the South by ll points, Smith (Dunedin) taking the cup. In the match for civilians only, the three highest scorers were as follows : — .Prouse, sen., Wellington), 47; Howell, Taranaki, 43 ; Piouse, jun,, Wellington, 41. Wellington, Monday, 7.30 p.m. Sailed, 5 p.m. — Jane Douglas, for Foxton. Passengers — Mrs Ander* son, Mrs Mudgeon, Messrs Knight, Eagles, Hare, Burt, Baker, and Hajnes. J One of the crew of the Warwick was sentenced to-day lo four weeks' imprisonment for being twice asleep while on look-out duty, on the yoyage out; the Magistrate saying the offence was a grave one, as by it he was endangering by negligence the lives of 250 persons: Anderson, of the Chronicle, has the New Zealander with a libel action in consequence of a letter which appeared in that journal this morning. In reply to a deputation to*day, the Hen Mr Macandrew said in order to encouraga.the production of sleepers in the colony, Government would be prepared to purchase sleepers from settlers who liked to cut them, without calling for tenders at all.
