THE Manawatu Herald. FRIDAY, JANUARY 10, 1879. THE SANDON RAILWAY.
What is being clone in connection with the Foxton-Sandon Eailway? On the 17th of October last, a meeting was held in Foxton, of the united committees, at which the company was constituted, the various rates to be, levied upon the lands agreed to, and the necessary instructions given to have the prospectus issued, the company registered, and the whole affair successfully launched. We learned some time ago, that the pians originally furnished were not upon the scale required by the Act, and that fresh plans on a reduced scale were being prepared,' but we are unable to see any reason in that for the laggardness displayed by the promoters. Surely the prospsctus might have been,Lssued *nd the bhare list opened. Had ibis been done probably a month vsould have bean saved. Every week of procrastination now, imperils the scheme It has been so long talked of that the interest will certainly evaporate un less active steps are speedily taken. We may point out to the promoters that the contact with the Wellington line has all along been regarded as an important element in the scheme ; so, also, the construction of the Sandon line would be without doubt strong reason why the Wellington railway should strike at Foxton, owing to the distance saved between hero and Greatford, if the Bulk line were formed. Under these circumstances, it is positively suicidal to procrastinate any further. A meeting should at once be held of the united committees, and the affair put before the 'public. Even if modifications are rendered necessary ia the plans and details of the scheme, that need not weigh against the company being brought from its present obscrurity. At the County Council meeting held on Nov--27, a resolution was passed, granting permission to the company to form the railway, so that all necessary prelimU
naries have been gone through. We hope thie provisional dh'ectOrc appointed at the Foxton meeting will accept our suggestion, and sit once bring the company before the public, and open the share list.
