THE Manamatu Herald. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 27, 1878.
By the courtesy of Mr Eothcrham, we have been enabled to see the proposed new tariff of charges to be levied at the Foxton wharf. It will be remembered that shortly after the Herald was started, we brought the matter of wharf charges under the notice of the district, pointing out especiallyjthat while on other wharves in the Colony these charges varied in amount, according to the class of goods, in Foxton there was no such variation, but a general charge of 2a 6d per ton was made, a further levy of Is being made for handling. This was a most unsatisfactory state
of affairs, for many reasons. Goods belonging to utterly different classes were made to pay the same rates ; whether received in bulk, as in the case of coal, flour, or timber, or in the smaller packages of general merchandise. Mr Rotherham fully admits tho injustice of this, and inform us that the scale he has now transmitted is exactly similar to one he sent in some months ago to the chic; offico as a recommendation. It is proposed to charge Is per ton upon coal and Is 6d per ton on flour. This will certainly be a great improvement upon the old arrangement of 2s 6d per ton all round . Al) the other classed are proportionately reduced, whilst several very desirable inimu ■ liitics are given to consignees and shippers,
