Referring to the question of scholarships, we may say that they -will be confined to children attending public schools only. There are to be seven scholarships — two for children whoso ages do not exceed 10 years, two for those over 12, two for those over 14, and 1 for over 16. Pour of the scholarships are to bo held for one year only, and throe for two years. The latter to be awarded to competitors of the ages of 12, 14, and 16, who make the best pa3ses. Children under 10 will be examined in Standard IV. ; under 12, in Standard V. ; under 14, Standard VI. ; under 16. in the Scholars' Certificate Examination. Candidates for scholarships must obtain a minimum of marks on each subject of 25 per cent of the whole, and a minimum of 50 per cent of total marks. No candidate "will bo admitted to the examination who has not at a school examination held during the last four months of the year either passed the Standard in which he is .to be examined, or ob<« tamed 120 marks at sucn school examination in some lower Standard. The above aro the main featui'es of the regulation issued by the Board, and as the examination takes place on the second Wednesday in J anuary next, the young people who intend to compete should at once begin to work in earnest. For the credit of tlio Manawatu, we hope to see some of the scholarships gained by the youth of this district.
