AGRICULTURAL ASSOCIATION
A meeting of the Mauawatu Agricultural Association was held afc the Foxton Public Hall on Saturday afternoon last. There was a good attendance of gentlemen ''om various parts of the County.
Mr Thj ane was voted to the chair.
Letters apologising for their absence was read from Messrs W. Simpson of Oroua, and Jtobert Linton, of Palmerston. Letters were also read from Messi-3 G. Hunter, M.H.R., and Waiter Johnston, M.H.R., of Wellington, signifying thoir iutention to become members of the Assjciation, and to do all in their power to forwp"d its interests. iVlr Hunter expressed hi& intontion to send exhibits.
The Hon. Secretary, Mr Walker, having mentioned medals and cards for prizes to successful exhibitors, Mr Christopher Simpson remarked that to consider a show at present was preniatuiv. What was really needed, wrs to get the Association firmly established, and to create a general interest in its operations, aud then a~show could easHy be got up. If a show were to be held, it must be soon, as the shearing season was rapidly coming on; otherwise, it could not bo held until March.
Mr G. Hadfield pointed ou-fc that owing to the cost incidental tb a show, it would be a mistake to hurry one on before the Society was ripe for it. At the same time, if a show were held, when sufficient funds were in hand, he thought it would give a powerful stimulus to the Society. Mr G. VV. Kusse 1 ! moved.—'* That as soon as 40 members are er-olled, the date and particulars of the show be decided upon."
Seconded by Mr Thynne and carried.
The Hon. Secretary wus empowered to incur any necessary expense in connection with the Society.
The Secretary produced the rules of the Hutt Agricnltural Society, and i was determined to niako these the basis of tho Manawatu Association.
it having been suggested that a Horticultural Show should be held in conjunction with the show of stock, &c,
Mr J. Kebbell thought it would be a mistake at present to connect the twe. The district was not sufficiently far advanced for that. 7 f Horticultuir 1 Shows were held, they were genei'"'y local ; whereas the show of stock, &c, wrs general, and a 1 ! in the County would be interested.
