LOCAL & GENERAL NEWS
No ships were in port at Picton this morning. The Taupata arrived from Tarakohe at 1.30 p.m. yesterday with 215 tons of cement for distribution in Marlborough and sailed empty for Wellington at midnight. Among a large complement of passengers carried by the Tamahine from Picton to Wellington yesterday were 40 girls from the Wellington and Palmerston North districts. They have been attending a camp held under the auspices of the Y.W.C.A. at Nydia Bay, Pelorus Sound, during the past fortnight. At the New Zealand grass track cycling championships to be held at Lower Hutt on Saturday, February 2, the Wellington Centre representatives will include a Marlborough rider, D. Wapp, who won the one mile senior title and was third in the senior half-mile at the Wellington provincial championships at Petone last Saturday. Having had first to wait for the announcement of the dates of the school holidays and then to adjust the judges' list to correspond with adjudicators who would be available, the Marlborough Competitions Society has finally been able to fix a date for the opening of the annual festival. It is to start on Monday, June 16. The names of the adjudicators will be announced shortly.
