Mr H. J. S. Mitchell left by air today to represent the Marlborough Garage Proprietors' Association at the annual conference of the N.Z. Motor Traders' Federation. He will return on Friday. Mr A. M. Hale left for Wellington to-day to attend the annual meeting of the N.Z.A.R.A., which will be held to-morrow evening. Mr Hale, who is the Marlborough Rowing Association's delegate, will return on Saturday. Mr and Mrs D. Knight, of Tua Marina, have been notified that their son, Corporal D. C. Knight, who was previously reported missing, is a prisoner of war. Corporal Knight, who is particularly well known in Marlborough hockey circles, was taken prisoner in Egypt about the middle of July. Pilot Officer John Austin Henry Smith. who has been awarded the Order of the Crown of Yugoslavia, is a son of Mr and Mrs W. A. Smith, London street, Dannevirke. Pilot Cfficer Smith was educated at the Dannevirke High School. He entered the R.N.Z.A.F. in 1939, and completed his training in Canada. He was commissioned last year. The death oocurred yesterday of Miss Mary Lydia Clark, M.B.E., a member of a well-known old Wellington family. She was about to board a tramcar in Riddiford street at about ten o'clock on Saturday night when she was knocked down by a motor-car, suffering a broken leg, severe injuries to the ribs and a scalp wound. She was at once taken co the Wellington Hospital, where she died yesterday morning. Guests at the Criterion Hotel last night included Mrs D. J. Tapper (Hammer), Miss M. Fitzgibben (Wellington), Mr H. A. Burke, Mr J. Slaybough (U.S.A.), Mrs E. Collins, Mr R. V. Pearce, Mr J. , Meikle (Christchurch), Captain J. Newman (Nelson), Mr and Mrs J. ToupITicolas (Ward).
