HAVELOCK NOTES.

ST. PETER'S GUILD. Express Special Servlce. An enjoyable afternoon was spent at the home of Mrs A. J. Brown last j week, when the members of St. I Peter's Guild held their monthly gift I meeting. There was an unusually large attendance, several visitors be- . ing present, and the sum of £2 4s was coritributed. During the afternoon songs were rendered by Mrs A. J. Brown and Miss T. Reader, Mrs Milgrew playing the accompaniments. Two competitions were held. The first, "Drawing Nursery Rhymes," was won by Mrs W. Boyd. and the second, "Word-building," by Mrs Milgrew. PATRIOTIC DANCE. The Havelock town hall was gaily decorated with flags on Saturday nighL the occasion being a dance organised by the young people in aid of patriotic funds. In spite of bad weather there was a good muster of enthusiasts, who danced to the music provided by Miss R. Mortimer and Mr Symon, a visitor from Blenheim. Supper was served in the library, where the tables were decorated with bowls of viburnum and variegated broom. A competition for a crystal water jug was won by Coleen •Oresswell, and one for a picture by Mr R. Glover.

PERSONAL. Mrs Coward, sen., Blenheim, has been visiting Mr and Mrs D. T. L. Coward. Mr and Mrs H. J. Flatt, Nelson, were the guests of their son, the Rev. H. J. Flatt, for the week-end. Mr and Mrs J. G. Johnston, Brightlands, Pelorus Sound, have been visiting Dr and Mrs C. S. Cantrell. Miss M. Brown, Blenheim, spent the week-end with her parents, Mr and Mrs A. J. Brown. Mrs Milgrew, Grovetown, was the guest of Mr and Mrs N. Wells, sen., during the week. Mrs Sutton (Wellington) and her two children are the guests of Mr and Mrs D. T. L. Coward. ST. PETER'S CHURCH: The old Bible from which many inspiring messages have been listened to jby the worshippers of St. Peter's, Havelock, during a period of many years has at last flnished its usefulness and its place has been taken by a book thoughtfully presented to the church by Mrs Margaret Mills, the widow of the late Hon. C. H. Mills, who at one time represented the Waimea .and Wairau constituencies. This family Bible, a gift to Mrs Mills from her husband, and used in their family life, cements very firmly the past to the present, for the late Mr Mills did much to help on the work of the church in the earlier days. During his time there was no resident minister in Havelock and three laymen made themselves responsible for the conducting of services. Mr Clark directed the choir and looked after the music, Mr Venimdre undertook the repair of the building, and Mr Mills read the service. Mr Mills often used to pull up from Eli Bay in the Pelorus Sound, approximately 30 miles, in an open boat in ordeir to conduct a service. It is no wond.er that the pioneers of our land appreciated their church life. And so another link with the past is formed. May the unselfish sacrifices of former worshippers instill an earnest desire to emulation in the ac-tivity of later generations.
