BAN ON R.A.F. NEWS STORIES. 50 WORDS FOR BIG OPERATIONS

Austerity is being introduced into all official announcements about the R.A.F., as a result of strmgent instructions from the Air Ministry, says the aeronautical correspondent of the Daily Mail. Superlativcs are banned froin descriptions of R.A.F. exploits. Cold, bare facts are demanded. Estimates of the aamage done by R.A.F. raids must be couched in the most general and ccnsevative ternio. Specific claims are' to be withheld till photographlcally corroborated. ? Recent communiquesi devoted no more than 5C colourless words to the bombing operations involving hundreds of plaiies, thousands of aiimen and sometimos the devastation of large areas of enemy propferty. Two days' air news is presented in the following items: — It was officially stated this morning that aircraft of the Army Cooperation Co:;nmand attacked grcund targets in, northern France. ♦ This afternoon, Fighter Command aircraft attacxed two armed trawlers off the French* coast, One aircraft of the Fighter Command is missing. One raider was shot down last
night when the Luftwaffe bombed two East Midlands towns and one in East Anglia. Berlin radio claimed that the Luftwaffe bombed important war installations in several towns in eastem England, and also a large supply harbour on the east coast, direct hits being observed. The1 R A.F. and the United States Air Force made widespread attacks on Germany and occupied territory in daylight yesterday. flying Fortresses, with a strong R.A.F. escort, attacked the German U-boat base cf Lorient and an aerodrome near Cherboui'g used by enemy long-range bombers. Three Flying Fortress.es did not return. The1 Vichy news agency announced that 100 were killed and 350 injured during the raid against port installatious at Lorient. The London Headquarters of the United States Army Air Force states: "In yesterda.y's raid on Lorient nine enemy flghters were destroyed by Flying Fortresses in a running flght from the French coast to the vicinity of Quimperle. Three I nited States bombers are missing."
