MILITARY SERVICE

APPEALS FOR TEACHERS, EDUCATION BOARD'S INTENTIONS.

P.A.

WELLINGTON Oct 22

The Wellington Education Board yesterday discussed the question of appeals for teachers posted to home service. The executive committee submitted the following recommendations : — "That the board be recommended to make endeavours to have released immediately all Class- II. and Class III. men known to be in camp. "That with regard to all men called in future ballots a list be kept showing their age, medical grade, and numberof' children, and that teachers be instructed to notify the board immediately they are called, and to furnish the required information. "That in cases where there is only one senior male teacher in a school, the board be recommended to appeal for such teacher to remain in the E.P.S., and that in the case of Ridgway the secretary forthwith lodge an appeal for the headmaster of that school." Mr G. E. H. Ball suggested that a small committee be set up to sift out the cases. lytr L. J. McDonald said it was a pity that the board had not taken action earlier. If a committee were set up to sift out the cases, it would relieve the secretary of responsibility. The chairman, Mr W. V. Dyer, said it would place the board in a most undesirable pcsition if it were to discriminate in the cases which were to be appealed for.

Mr N. R. Seddon moved, as an amendment, that a clause be added giving power to the executive to report to the board on special cases. Mr Dyer said that in cases of hardship the wife or mother would be the better person to lodge an appeal. Mr D. McCaskill seconded the amendment. Mr T. K. Moody opposed the amendment on the ground that the board had already decided to appeal for all teachers. The amendment was lost and the recommendations of the executive were adopted.
