WOMEN'S INSTITUTES.
MEETING AT KOROMIKO. The October meeting of the Koromiko Women's Institute was presided
j over by Mrs Wiiiiams, with an attendance of eight members. The motto for the month was "'Union is strength." An assortnrent of gifts for the lepsrs was received from the members. The delegate to the counci! meeting read a report of the proeeedings. It was stated that 13 women had attended the lecture by Miss M. Cocks Johnston on the preservation of fruit and vegetables, which had proved most interesting. The roll call was "What I enjoy auring winter." Competitions resulted: An article from a salt bag, Mrs Randall 1, Mrs Brunetti and Miss Randall 2; best bloom, Mrs Randall 1, Mrs Wiiiiams and Miss Randall 2. The surprise competition was won by Mrs Wiiiiams. The hostesses were M;*s S. Taylor and Miss Taylor. SPRINGLANDS-FARNHAM MEETING. Members and friends of the Springiands-Farnham Institute met in St. Barnabas' Hall, with Mrs R. Walker presiding. After a short prayer by Mrs I. Barton, members were asked to stand as a mark of sympathy with Mesdames H. Jellyman and Mrs Folster in their recent bereavements. A letter from the Services Club thanking members for their help for the week was received. In response to' a request from the secretary of the Health Camp Association asking for a delegate to be appointed, Mrs R. Parkes, of Farnham, was asked to represent the institute. The treasurer's report was presented, and a report on the half yearly council meeting was read by Mrs.W. Watson. Mrs A. Hale was thanked for the shoulder-sprays she had made to be presented at the council meeting. The golden thread was taken by Mrs A. Duncan, who read a piece called "Change of heart," and a poem entitled "A Nation on her Knees." Final arrangements were made for lectures from Miss M. Cocks Johnston. Before afternoon tea the singing circle entertained with two part songs. The roll call, "A gardening mistake," was well responded to by members. Further items by the singing circle were enjoyed, after which their leader, Mrs Brown, was presented with a shoulder- spray by the president, as she is leaving the district and will be missed very much by the institute. Mrs Brown, as a farewell gesture, played a pianoforte solo. Competitions resulted : Large bloom, Mrs R. Walker 1, Mrs F. Payne 2, Mrs K. Swain 3; small bloom. Mrs F. Payne 1, Mrs G. Lowe 2; trophy competition, Mrs G. Herd 1, Mrs W. Watson 2, Mrs F. Payne 3; monthly competition, Mrs G. Duncan 1, Mrs K. Swain 2. The hostesses for November are to be Mesdames H. Jellyman, J. Manson, G. Lowe, E. Lloyd, J. May and W. McAllister..
