SMART POLICE WORK
ALLEGED THIEF ARRESTED. MONEY TAKEN FROM CAFETERIA. A smart piece of work on the part of the Blenheim police resulted in the arrest at Christchurch last evening of a soldier in connection with a, theft which cccurred at the Kiwi Cafeteria in Blenheim some time between 11.45 o'clock on Monday night and 7.30 a,m. yesterday. Investigatiofis by the local police resulted in a telephone call to Christchurch, and the accused ma.n, who was on leave, was arrested as he stepped off the train from Hundalee following its arrival at the Christchurch railway station. It is understood that £21 of the £24 taken from the shop, owned by Mr E. L, Fryor, was recovered. The accused was to appear at the Christchurch Magistrate's Court this morning. The money had been left by an attendant in an office at the rear of the building, and it is understood that a rear door had been accidentally left unlocked. The accused, who had been in the cafeteria until it waS closed for the night, is alleged to have returned and to have removed the money after gaining access to the building through the unlocked door.
