RIVER BOARD'S POSITION. NOT IN RATING AREA. At the meeting oi the Wairau River Board last night, Mr R. A, Hawkins brought up the possibility of a break-thrcugh of the Wairau river to cut a new channel to the bar, as discussed at the last County I Council meeting. The chairman, Mr E. S. Parker, explained that the River Board area, did not go right down to the sea and ihe board eollected no rates' from the properties said to be menaced. Mr H. J. Stace said that the County Council-' s position was that .it had to protect its roads. The river .might take Ihe road away — stone would be the best thing to biock it — but lie did not think the river would make a new channel. There was too much rising ground. About five chains of road might go-. The chairman: I don't think it is going to make a new bar, which would conceriv us.
