LINKWATER. RED CROSS FUNDS.
Express Special Serviee.
On Saturday evening the local subcentre of the Red Cross Society held a combined euchre tournament and dance to provide funds and also to contribute to the society's fund for relief in cases of disaster. There was a good attendance, visitors from Havelock assisting to make the evening a success. The euchre prizes were won by Doreen Tomlinson and Mr A. Eden, consolation prizes going to Molly Tomlinson and Mr E. Challies. Novelty dance prizes were won as follows: Lucky spot, J. Dalziel and Mrs Haythorne; Monte Carlo, G. T. Sutton and Mrs N. Simmonds; Cinderella, T. Hebberd and Betty Ewart. In two other competitions a bag of flour and a box of chocolates were won by A. Finlay and R. Hebberd respectively. Mrs R. Pearcy, president of the sub-centre, in thanking all for assisting, said that the proceeds of the evening totalled £7, which was very satisfactory. Supper was pro - vided by the organisers. The musicians were Messrs E. H. Looms and W. Adams. WOMEN'S DIVISION. The monthly meeting of the Women's Division was held on Thursday at Mrs L. Pask's residence, Mrs R. Pearcy presiding over an attendance of 14 members and several visitors. The roll calT, "Collection for' the Leper Fund," resulted in the sum of £3 2s being contributed, which was regarded as very satisfactory. A letter from the provincial executive acknowledged a contribution of £6 to the housekeeping fund. An invitation to members to attend the annual garden party of the Havelock Suburban Women's Institute was re ceived. A sum of £1 12s 6d, collected for autographs on the Red Cross quilt which the branch has given, is to be handed to the local branch of the Red Cross Society. At the conclusion of the business the president introduced Miss Cocks Johnston, who was present at the invitation of the branch, to give demonstrations and talks on various subjects. The rest of the morning was occupied in instruetion in the preservation of fruit and vegetables, After the luncheon adjournment there was a demonstration of papier maehe work, followed by another on spinning, the lecturer showing members how to make a simple spindle for home use. Members were unanimous in declaring this to be the m-ost interesting and instructive day they had enjoyed, and Mrs Pearcy expressed these sentiments in thanking Miss Cocks Johnston, and members enthusiastically invited the lecturer to pay them a further visit to give a talk on horticulture. Miss Cocks Johnston replied and thanked Mrs Pask for the use of her home. Afternoon tea brought the proceedings to a close. PERSON AL. Mr and Mrs A. Adams, Carterton, are visitmg Mr and Mrs W. Adams. Mr V. Looms has re turned from a short visit to Wellington. Mrs Reeves, Wellington, is staying with her daughter, Mrs A. J. Henderson. After taking a course in first aid, Mr V. Looms recently underwent an examination, and secured a pass.
