CRUCIFIXION SCENE
WORK OF A C ONTEMPOR AR Y
P.A. Cable.
LONDON, Oct. 17.
What is claimed to be an authentic portrait of Christ has been found in an Itallan private collection, according to the Giornale d'ltalia, which says it is the work of a contemporary artist who probably witnessed the Crucifixion. Frofessor Rostovgeff found the portrait, which is on a medallion, during excavations at Dura Europe, in Syria. Christ is represented on the Cross, looking at His mother, who is leaning aga'inst the Cross, with St. John standing beside her. The medallion is believed to have once belonged to an Apostle. There is an inscription on the back, "Si Os," which Italian experts believe to be an abbreviation of the engraver's name, also two Roman sixes, meaning the sixth hour of Christ's sufferings. The owner, Madame Della Paolera, is stated to have been offered £300,000 for the medallion by a Chilean collector. \7
