ROWING
WAIRAU SHEDS OPENED. NO NEW YEAR REGATTA. \ Splendid weather conditions, a good crowd, and a series of spirited races ensured the success of the Wairau Rowing Club's opening function on Saturday afternoon. The speakers were Messrs. C. A. Webster, vicepresident of the Marlborough Amateur Rowing Association, who spoke in the unavoidable absence of the president, Mr A. A. Whiting, of Picton, A. M. Hale, president of the Blenheim Rowing Club, and L. Workman, the- Blenheim Club captain. Mr Hale congratulated the club upon attempting to carry on in difficult times, and expressed regret at the fact that there would be no New Year's Day regatta. He suggested as an alternative an inter-club fixture on the Wairau. The new season was officially opened by Mrs W. Gill, a life member of the club. 1 j t 1 Results of the pair-oared sprint races conducted were as follows: — First round : Wiese and Charters beat Woolley and Fitzgerald; Killian and Monson beat Sheridan and Middlem^ss; Kitson and Carmont beat Denny and Huntley; Beer and Wiig lost to Aldridge and Connery; Gill and Ward beat Williamson and Clark; Woolley and Cheesman beat Adams and Fraser; Sadd and T. Thomas beat Luke and Beaton; Cootes and Elkington a bye. Second round Aldridge beat Cootes; Killian lost to Kitson; Woolley beat Gill; Sadd a bye. Semi-final : Sadd beat Kitson; Woolley beat Aldridge. Final : N. Sadd and-T. Thomas beat S. Woolley and L. Cheesman.
