NEW TRAIN SERVICE

DEPARTURE FOR CLARENCE. FIRST TRIP THIS MORNING. Passengers for the south were astir early this morning and there were over 150 on board the first train to leave Blenheim just before eight o'clock for the new terminus at Clarence Bridge. The train arrived from Picton punctually, and was due at Clarence Bridge at 10.30. The return journey is timed to commence at 3.20 p.m. During the past week carpenters and painters have been busily. engaged in renovating and altering the Blenheim station which, as a result, will be much more convenient both for passengers and the staff. The former porters' room at the northern end has now become the stationmaster's offlce, and accommodation for the porters, etc., is being found in the detached building which formerly housed the Inspector of Permanent Way's store. The old public office is almost unrecognisable, twin entrances having been provided to the newly-situated counter, and a good deal of interior alteration having been carried out. A section of the vestibule has been incorporated in the ticket office, which has been fitted with twin ticket slides. At the southern end of the station workmen are laying a siding along the edge of the road. Here freight cars will be shunted to facilitate unloading on to trucks. — — V
