LIVE SHELL IN THIGH
RISKY OPERATION PERFORMED. B.O.W. RUGBY, Oct. 15. A live Messerschmitt cannon shell five inches long and weighing two lbs, which was embedded in the thigh of a naval officer, has been removdd by a surgeon at a Brighton air-raid casualty hospital. The officer is now progressing favourably. An X-ray examination revealed the shell, and the doctor decided to operate despite the possibility of the shell exploding in the process. The anaesthetist and the nurses stood by as the doctor probed around the base of the shell. The danger was heightened by the fact that the shell's position necessitated the use of considerable force to extract it. After the removal of the shell ir, was handed over to a bomb disposal unit. A colleague of the naval officer, standing beside him, was killed instantly by another cannon-shell.
