AUCKLAND, Oct, 14.

Damage estimated at about £10,000 was caused this morning at Westfield Freezmg Company'Si works when firei destroyed the skin drying plant, which is part of the wool and sheepskin departrnent adjoining the slaughtering block. A gcod save was made by the company's voiunteer fire brigade in ccnjunctlon with a number of suburban brigades'. The manager of the company, Mr A. G. Bryan, said the cause of the fire had not been discovered, but it was believed to be due to a fault in the installation. The damage might have been, greater had the fire occurred at the height of the jf;eason. He said that production would not be held up and the damage would be repaired before December, when skin drying operations would be most needed. A returned Maori Battalion man, Robert Hammond, who was working at the far end of the plant, felt unaccustomed heat and saw smoke. He immediately rang the alarm. Twenty-on,e members of the: company's fire brigade played a, prominent part in suppressing the fire.
