SAVING PETROL AND TYRES,

WELLINGTON, Oct. 14.

"The Railway Departrnent is taking over a section of the South Island Main Trunk line from the Public Works Departrnent and will commence running express trains from Picton as far south as the Clarence on Monday," the Minister for Railways, Mr Semple, announced today. "The extension to he taken over amounts to an extra 20 miles." Adjustments would be made in the rcad motor services where the railway took over the traffic. This would mean a saving of 100,000 car miles a year, the Minister said, and would effect a reduetion in the ues of petrol and tyres. The fuel saved was estimated at approximately 11,000 gallons a year. y —
