Mr Hicks, Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Works, announced a couple of months ago that the Ministry had now collected 1,000,000 tons of iron and steel since recovery began ten months ago. Included in this total are 200,000 tons of railings from about 2,000,000 houses. The million tons of scrap are the equivalent of 2,000,000 tons of imported iron ore. Mr Hicks pointed out that the present rate must be increased to keep pace with the increase of production of warships, tanks, and other war munitions.
