THE VE GET ABLE PROBLEM. "The institution of a programme of vegetable production for the armed forces, under the control of the Department of Argiculture, as stated by the Minister, is well known to us," stated Mr L. V. Phillips, secretar.y of the Dominion Council of Commercial Gardeners, "and we hope that the venture will be succesful. But it is on the slioulders of the commercial grower that the responsibility of supplying the eanning factories with their vast requircments rests. and it is he who must provide for the civilian demand. "We can only reiterate, as a council, that the commercial growers of the Dominion acted from a sense of duty in informing the publio of New Zealand of the grave possibility of the Dominion's failing down on her commitments for vegetable production. This is a matter which should not become controversial. It is one that should be tackled in a cairn and steady analytical manner, and an endeavour should be made to face ihe problem and not to run away from it. The time for investigation and experiment has passed, and all l'isks must be minimised. The urgency of the matter demands irnmediate action, and we have shown how the best use can be made of the existing production facilities," — V —
