John Houldsworth, the famous motor racing "ace," when driving his Bugatti in the 300 miles Empire Trophy Handicap at Brooklands, violently skidded at a snake bend. The car somersaulted twice, and Houldsworth died in hospital from a fractured sfcull. Earl Howe also cras'hed at a.. bend. His car tumed round twice, and ran backwards towards the fence and was smashed, but Howe was uninjured. Eyston, driving an M.G. Magnette, averaging 83.01 miles per hour, won. Whitney Sfraight, the American millionaire, driving a Mastrati at 82.45 m.p.h. was second, Eccles (Bugatti) at" 81.70 m.p.h. was third, and Coibb (Alfa Romea) at 81.36 was fourth. '
