A MUSICAL SUCCESS

THE RECTTAL AT NELSON. The series of recitals which will be continued at Blenheim to-niglit and Picton to-morrow evening was opened at Nelson last night with a ffne dcgree of success. The concert, given in the School of Music, attracted a large audienoe, and the measure of appreciation that they manifested, including many recalls, was a marked tribute to the merit of the entertainment. Miss Francis Morrison met with a congratulatory reception, and the audience evidenced much delight in the artistio employment of her " beautiful contralto in "The Enchantress," various operatic air,s and other numbers. Mr Harison Cook's singing made a pronounced impression ; he was accorded a deserved meed of reeognition as an artist of rare' proficiency. Not only through the quality of liis remarkable bass voice did Mr Harison Oook succeed, but also through the art oi histrionic interpretation. Yery effect iv© in each instance was his adaptation to tlie various them.es and roles that he rendered- — from such examples as ' 'The Prologue (II Pagliacci), "The Two Grenadiers," "I am a Roarner," and his dramatio characterisation of Mephistopheles in the Serenade from Faust, to his selection of ballads, tender or rollicking. Mrs W. R. Allen, isolo pianiste and accompauisto, who also won high favor, contributedi a great deal to the success of the programme, which was brought to a brilliant conclusion with the rendition bv Miss Ftances Morrison and Mr HarisQn. Cook of the dnet from "Samson and Delilah."
