C iven suflicient encourageme ilt in the way of tariff protection, a group of industrialists, with commancl of over £1,000,000 capital, is said to be prepared to lay out and equip a modern complete pl'ant for the manufacture and assepibly of motor chasses. The Conimonwealth is at present spening over £20.000,000 a year in imports of motor chasses parts, accessories and petrol. In the last fiscal year the value of imported chasses was £10,328,063; of imported bodies, £1,183,872; and of parts, £404,444 making a total under these three lieads of £11,916,379. The number of chasses imported was 88,602. £2,034,353 worth of crude rubber, £2,037,128 worth of tyro covers, and £644,341 worth of other tyres and tubes were purchased abroad. Petrol imports attained the enormousi total of £6,508,599. The board will investigate every phase of tho proposed industry.
