ITALY

"MUST CONQUER GREAT TERRIT0RY." J0URN ALIST ' S VIEWS. Commendatore Arnaldo Cipolla, a distinguished Italian journalist, who is at present in Sydney, says that Italy must acquire colonies, even by conquest. Speaking of tlie Fascist regime in Italy, he said there was no doubt, as had been aniply demonstrated by l'oreign correspondents who had been sent to Italy, that the enormous majority of the Italian people were unreservedly in favor of Mussolini and his programme. The opposition was oomposod mainly of men who once lield lucrative positions in the Government service. Nobody in Italy believed in Parliament — an instrument which though suitable for Anglo-Saxon nations, was quite foreign to the temperament and cliaracter of the Latin nations. The characteristics of Fascism were poorness and nonesty, for, he said, nobody became rich in its service. The ideal of serving tlie State was put above everytliing else. "Italy must find colonies for her increasttng population," Conimodatore Cipolla declared. "No great nation can tolerate for long the loss of her sons in their migration to foreig nlands." Tliree quarters of the poplilation of the Argentine are of Italian birth or extraction, and there are siniilar examples elsewhere. In three or four vears Italy will be foreed to conquer a great territory in the Mediterranean, probably in Asia Minor. Tliis area has only a population of five millions, and it is very rich in minerals and agriculture ;tlie climate is ideal for Italian.s. To-day Italy is a oountry with a heautiful climate and ancient monument, s. To-mor-row ,she must be a country worthy of her great lieritage, and in possession of territory where it will not be necessary for her sons to foregc their nationality or their essential characteristics."
