[Press Association.]
WELLINGTON, Sept . 27. In ref]>ly to a complaint by Mr Wallace, chairman of the Auckland Hospital Board, of the want of projper medical examination of immigrants at Home, Mr Thomson, Director cf Im migration, denies the aecuracy of the staitement and contends that the examination is not only sufficient but is severe. In a recent report the High Commissioner stated that he was quite satisfied fhat every reasona blc precaution was taken. "It is, however," said Mr Thomson, "not to be oxpected that among the thousands of immigrants there will not be some who may require hospital trea-tment in their first year. Recently the principal medical officers of the Dominion had a conferenee on the best methods to- be adopte-d, and the scheme they designed has since been followed hy 2000 doctors. From time- to time .fuller information is required, and such cases are held back. There have been occasional instances of perfunctorv examination, and then a further inquiry has toi b-e made." Mr Thomson points out that before hlaming the system of inspection it has to he shown that disease existed in a discoverable form when the migrant was exarnined.
