PEKIN, Sept, 26. Reports from Honan describy the most terrible massacre in the history of the province. Thousands of defenceless people in the city of Shekichen were slaughtered by bandits in oold blood. Tlie city w'as burned and hundreds were carried into captivity for ransom. Meagre details brought by Chinese Christian runners state thiat tlie carnage was terrible. The bandits; spared nobody. They Jooted the city of portable valuables and went on with an awful orgi© of slaughtef, killin g' r'ight and left. It is not known whfether the other foredgn missionaries in the city escaped death, but it is certain that the China Inlan-d Mission has been totallv clestro.ved. At the conclusion of their hellish work of loot, rapine, and murder, the bandits set fire to the city, which was reduced to ashes, mercifully covering the corpses qf thousands of vietims of the greatest catastrophe in any city in Honan since the days of the Tartar m assacres . Tlie missionaries stationed in the vicinity were Misses Brook, Pbppins, and McGuire, and the Rev. Messrs Conway and! "VVeller and their wives.
