THE WOOL MARKET

EXC KI.LENT D EMAND.

(Special Correspondent.)

AVELLINGTON, Sept. 25. ■ All who- hr.vo any opinio-nsi to express on tlm wool market are generally agreel tliat there is an exoellent demand for the staple at current prioes. At the London saies Oontinental buyers are the priiv ipal ope-rat-ors, and they are conf'uiiig their attention to- me-rino and halfhrcd wo-ols. Bradford has ben ope-rating ve-ry cautio-usly. But Bradford's business is h-eing affecte-d by the coal strike. As soon as this dispnt© is ended — and it seems interminable — there- will be a strong revival in Bradford. There is, ho-wever, ve-ry little halfbred wool produced in the North Island, but for the grade-s- of wool produced the London quotitions to-day equal about 13) pe-r cent pe-r lb., which is on a parity with the priee-s ruliug at AYell i ngto-n at tlie Afarcli saies. The latest reports show that the market is active and prices are well maintained. There is every promise that when the New Zealand

saies be-gm on November 15, prices will be- steady, aird the- steadipess; o-f the market will preve-nt speeulation which often upsets a market. If the weather ho-lds shearingj should commenee- soon and the catalo-gnes for the November s-ales should show an increase o-n those- of November last year. It is somewhat notable that last year, and also in 1924, prices wero at ihe peak in November, and history may repe-at itself. If the weather conditions are favorable for early shearing a: lot- of wool will be hurried to the' store-s for -sale in November. The position of wool is very satisfactory, and it is to be lioped that nothing will be done to disturh the marketing arrangements.
