ANALYSIS OF WATER,

Tbc^ to report that some time ago Dr Chesson. kindly offered to have an analysis mad© of the water 'coming trojn the natural wells at Batty's lice&k^ liiv Johnston, Sanitary inspector, has visited the wells with me ecfl. has taken a sample of the well Co which suitable access for sampling purposes can at pivaeut be obtained J-bis well being not far from the two <Udier:j, the analysis will give a fair idea of thy quality of the .water from fne. o-Jiers, but, should the .scheme proceed, careful samples would be taken of these others in order to make certain tnat no organic impurities are present in harmful quantities. There «£p3 not jippear to be any indication ot such impurities, the water being v^ry clear and cold as it issues from the. welk. It ia best, however, .to fcave a careful analysis, as affording a Better idoa of the quality than can be judged by the evidence of the eyes onlj. Permanent hardness 1.25, 0.8 < grains per gallon. Temporary hardness 3.00, 2.10 grains per gallon. Total hardness 4.25, 2.97 grains per gallon. , On standing, the water gave a miiuite deposit, which when examined microscopically was found to consist of vegetable debris and siliceous particles. No living organisms (diatoms : etc) were present. This is a soft water of excellent quality for household or steam, purposes'. Dr Chesson, of the Health Department, in an enclosing note, remarked that "this supply should be very satisfactory from a health, point of view." j
