AXEMEN'S CONTESTS.
—. -^ Preai Association. Electric Telegraph Copyright. Inveroakqill, March 31. The axemen's first carnival came off to-day, and was a great success. About 6000 spectators were present, and great interest was taken in the events, as Pettit and Goold came from Tasmania to compete. They won the New Zealand championship, sawing a 2ft log of red pine in 39 4-sth sees, beating Fisher and Hudson, local men; but these turned the tables on the visitors in the intercolonial sawing event, whicn they won in 31 2-sth sees. Pettit won the single-handed sawing. The handicap sawing was won easily Tobm and Macintosh from scratch, but they were disqualified for going out of their wood, and the first prize went to Mitchell and Wood, 4sec ; Thomson Bros., 6sec, 2; Pettit and Goold, scr, 3. The champion ohop ,was won by More, of Kiverton. Casey, the Taranaki champion, came down to compete, but unfortunately contracted a bad cold, and, could not do so.
