Constable Irwin, who serxed with the Second Contingent in South Africa and joined the police on his return, was seriously inj^ed on Saturday night, and is now in the hospital in a critical condition. He had arrested John Duffy on a charge of disorderly conduct and conveyed Mm to the station in a hansom cab. On arrival there Irwin ran into the station crying " I'm done for, and fell on the floor bleeding. Duffy was secured and placed in a padded Irwin states Duffy became violent in * the cab, and beat him severely and kicked him on the left side and ab domen and forcedhis head through the WlAtthe Police Court John Duffy was charged with assaulting Constable Irwin so as to cause him actual bodiy harm, and with assaulting Constable Hodge, and with damaging a hansom McKeown was charged with inciting Duffy to resist Constable Irwin Both were remanded for eight days, McKeown being allowed baill in two sureties of £50 each.
