♦ GREAT RECEPTION AT THE CAPE. Wellington, January 8. The Cape Times states there was a scene of wild enthusiasm at the railway goods yard on the afternoon of November 27th, when the New Zealand contingent was despatched northwards m two special trains. Their abrupt departure prevented them from sharing m the demonstration on paradejwhen the combined oolonial troops received a oivio welcome, but presumably the military commanders wished to get the men to the front as soon as possible, and orders were given on the 27fch thai; they were to prepare for entraining at 5 p.m. The station yard was packed *Ash people, who cheered again and again, sang "God Save the Queen," "Rule Britannia," "Auld Lang Syne," and then cheered for all they were worth. At intervals, until the trains had disappeared round the ourve by the oaßtle, the pipers of the Capetown Highlanders, and a band of brass instruments played by turns during the entraining of the men and baggage, whioh latter included three day's rations drawn from the Imperial base depot.
