Pushing on from Arundel, the troops under Major •General French came iuto contact with the Boers at Rendsburg, a few miles south of Coles burg. At that point the enemy was entrenched, but the British force, the mobility of which gives it a great advantage, out-manoeuvred the position; and the enemy, fearing that they would be cut off from their base, retreated towards Ooleeburg. Major-General Frenoh followed, executing a rapid advance under cover of darkness, the infantry riding m waggons. He found the enemy on Monday at dawn, stretching for six miles along the hills round Oolesburg, The infantry, supported by ten guns, opened a feint attaok on the enemy's front, doing much execution, and silencing the Boer guns. Meanwhile the cavalry and light artillery turned the Boer right flank. The enemy were surprised and dismayed lest their retreat should be out off ; and they fled eastward, Major-General Frenoh then occupied Oolesburg, The New South Wales man and the New Zealanders participated m the engagement.
