HAVELOCK NEWS.
(From our Own Correspondent.) On Saturday last, a meeting of the members of the Church of England residing here was held in the School-room, by request of the Bishop of Nelson, for the purpose of electing a gentleman to represent the District in the Synod at Nelson. W. Whitehorn, Esq , took the chair, and the meeting was well attended. As Mr. Malia, a Nelson gentleman* who takes gi'eat interest in Church affairs, kindly proffered his services as our representative, his offer was gladly accepted, on the motion of Mr. Paul and Dr. Weld. I hope it will not be long before there will be a church built, as the subscription list begins to look somewhat respectable. The plans and specifications for the Church have been sent to the Rev. Archdeacon Butt, and as soon as they are returned, the committee propose to call for tenders, and get to work at once. The School Cpmmittee held a meeting on Thursday last, when Mr. Douslin was reelected Chairman, in the place of Mr. Paul, who recently resigned. The new Board of Works held a Meeting on Saturday evening, for the purpose of initiating proceedings. Mr. G. E. Levien was unanimously elected chairman. The Board laid a rate of- 3d; in the pound. They also fixed the salary of the clerk, at £25 a year. He is to act as collector and Inspector of nuisances, &c. Inspector Adams was appointed to the office, subject to the approval of His Honor the Superintendent. Mr. Wells was appointed Assessor
at a salary of £5. The Board then adjourned for a month to a low of the. Assessment being prepared.
