Wellington, Friday, 6 p.m, Judge Johnson has been consulting other judges to omit the beheading and quartering portion of the sentences on the rebel prisoners, whose sentences were deferred, and whose lives were guaranteed when they surrendered. They differ in opinion. McDonnell’s despatch reports fully the attack on Te Kooti’s pa ; it was a splendid affair; 37 dead bodies were found, and 20 women and children taken prisoners. Te Kooti has returned to the bush ; the friendlies are following up. Our loss was four killed and four wounded Te Hui Hui, the greatest chief in Tapuo, has sent in word that he is prepared, with his followers, to surrender. Taupo country being thus cleared, the Kaimanawa gold country will be opened to prospectors immediately.
