THE Marlborough Express.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 28, 1869.

“ Give me the liberty to know, to utter, and to rrgu freely according to conscience, above all other liberties. —Milton.

We do not belong'to the silly-sanguine class of people who imagine that “one swallow makes a summer,” yet we cannot help feeling our heart dilate with hopes of a brighter future for our adopted country, as we listen to the busy hum of the steam engine, and the Flax Machine. Earnestly and persistently as we have advocated the establishment of Local Industries, we feel ourselves free from a charge of egotism, when we take some credit to ourselves, as having been to some extent instrumental in promoting their early developement. A visit to Mr. Coleman’s new mill in the Grove Road, which commenced operations on Monday last, carried us back in imagination to the early days of British Manufactures, when Art struggled with inexperience, and while we sympathised with our spirited fellow-townsman in all the difficulties with which he may have to contend, we felt sure that the time is not for distant when the, till lately, despised [Flax swamps of New Zealand shall stand L s fair rivals to the Cotton fields of South our lips, ; it was when we gazed upon this the pioneer Flax Machine, and wished it “ God’Speed.”
