THE SPRING CREEK SCHOOL.
To the Editor of the. Marlborough Express. Sir, —Your readers must regret your “overwhelming pressure of correspondence,” when it compels you to omit a third of those respectable productions from the Spring Creek in (I presume meant so) answer to my communication on “Our Schools,” but perhaps you more than guessed they were the compositions of one individual only ; and, as the scurrility of these emanations ffrom that districtsufficiently indicate their source, 1 leave the writer to the enjoyment of his peculiar gratification, and would only refer any who may feel an interest in the matter to my letter in your pages of the 9th last.—l am, &c,, A Friend to Education. [All the letters on this subject are in different writings, and attached are different names.— Ed. M.E.]
To the Editor of the Marlborough Express. Sir, — In your space of last week a person, pretty well known in the Spring Creek district, signing himself “A Friend to Education,” has thought proper to make an exposition of his views, and passing a censure on the majority of the inhabitants for all the disasters that has lately occurred within the district. Let the disgrace fall on his own shoulders, for no other person has been the author but himself, and if he had spoken the truth this would never have happened, and consequently there would have been no cause for “ gross insult.” The letter written by him is an example in the same style of aggression, to wit; the “hole and corner meeting” (so called) was expressly advised by the whole of the committee; yet at the public meeting held a few days after, of which due notice was given, this one of the Committee denies having any knowledge of the then meeting, or for what purpose it was called although he was present at the time, and actually consented to the same being called. It is false that the new committee ousted the only two dissentients —there being only one present, and he solicited to take office again, but refused to act. Respecting the schoolmaster being universally esteemed, it is questionable, inasmuch that many complaints have been made for neglect of duty. It is a fact substantiated that he purposely went away on the Saturday night with the key in his pocket, to prevent the schoolhouse being opened for the purpose of religious service ; this was done deliberately, which he himself admitted, not to one only but to several, at the same time denying to others that he knew anything whatever about it, and this, too, after admitting having seen the notice, which was torn down, and was afterwards seen in Mr. Duffty’s coat pocket. The next is a private conversation between one of the committee and the master to the effect what did the committee and the master intend doing with the Government money ? he supposed “ you five of the committee will put that in your own pockets.” Herein the master placed himself in a degraded position, by denying that such langugage ever passed his lips ; he has further degraded himself by denying facts, and by do; e questioning has admitted the same Again, when accused by a plain and honest settler of having
altered the time of the Sunday school, on purpose to prevent the morning service, he haughtily requested the father of a large family to fall down on his knees and beg his pardon—what a
As to his abilities, they were never tested ; the situation was given him because he happened to be a Wesleyan. A wiser and better man, of tried abilities, applied at the same time, but he did not belong to the same sect. * * * * * One of the Committee. January 6th, 1869.
