A NEW LOCAL INDUSTRY.

To the Editor of the Marlborough Express.

Sir, —Being inland a few days ago, I heard a conversation relative to the desirability of starting a boiling-down establishment in this district, and feeling it to be the duty of every colonist to throw what light he can on anything likely to conduce to the general prosperity of our adopted country, I venture to make the following remarks : About two years ago, more or less, a few settlers in Hawke’s Bay resolved sooner than be in the hands of the butchers to boil their surplus sheep down. They at once called a meeting, formed a committee, a prospectus, and a company, and very soon sold their shares ; wrote to Melbourne for all information, and I think in about three months had the thing at work. Their vans run to all the neighbouring townships on set days to dispose of legs, hearts, tongues, &c., which do not pay to boil down. They have a curing-house, and export to Wellington and other ports spiced rolls and legs of mutton ; have an extensive piggery, which consumes their offal; in fact, everything is turned into cash directly or indirectly ; and as a proof that it pays, another establishment is bein ', or has been by now, put up within a few miles of it. Now any one feeling an interest in the establishment of a boiling down arrangement can I am sure, get every information, gladly given to them by addressing any of the following gentlemen .-—The Hon. H 11. Russell, Waipakerau ; Russell, Esq. ;W. F. Nelson, Arlington ; Coleman, Esq., Havelock ;J. N Williams, Poporangi; and Captain Tanner, Hawke's Bay. If it is decided to have one in this district, I should suggest it would bo best to send a confidential and practical man to look over the Hawke’s Bay affair, and see how everything is arranged. It might perhaps be open to improvi - ment like most human works. I am, &c., J. G. C.
