THE CUSTOMS EXAMINATION.

To the Editor of the Marlborough Express '. Sir, —In the issue of the News of Saturday last, there appeared a letter complaining of the facilities afforded by the Customs officer to one tradesman, in weighing and examining his goods, subject to duty. This has not been in any way a favour granted to the one and denied to others, but rather the custom for some time past; and if the officer was so strict as that correspondent would wish, I think the duties of most the tradesmen would be paid in Wellington, as they used to be some time ago, and the “ man with; his eyes open ” would be one of the first to grumble at that, seeing it would. be detrimental to .the finances of the province.. lam not the favoured one alluded to by the “ man with his eyes open,” but remain, yours truly, A Tradesman. Blenheim, October 23rd, 1868.
