THE MUTUAL IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY.

a “ L"t the gall’d jade wince, | Our withers aro unwruug.”— Hamlht. | To the Editor of the Marlborough Express. Mr, Editor, — I must say that I think your correspondent S.L.Q.R. might have pursued a more dignified course, and either left my letter unnoticed, or have shewn where I was in the wrong. There was no occasion to hang a sneer on my offer to teach a class in Drawiugand Perspective, which offer I was verdant enough to think might to a real Mutual Improvement Society, he of essential service. Perhaps, Sir, he thinks my offer like most things people get for nothing—not worth much. Being in Art self-taught i did, and still do think, that I could remove some of the difficulties I myself encountered in an uphill task, and although the artistic eminence to which I have risen be not very great, it is quite as high as I aspire to, namely, where those who know little, may teach those who know less; and, although I might do no great things, I shall not yield to S.L.Q.R. or any one in an earnest desire to benefit my fellow-man. For his permissive offer to become a member of a Society who meet t® discuss History for relaxation and amusement, I am afraid I am 100 practical for that, and as to learning to talk or debate —my friends, one and all, declare there is no need for that, and I think myself, in that art 1 am at least proficient. Yours &c. W. N.
