PROTECTION OF ANIMALS ACT, 1867. . .... (from our.Ovm Correspondent.) This day; v; Marcli 14, 1868, iu pursuance of notice by. advertisement, a public meet-
ing was held in the School-room, Wairau V-alley, at 2 p.m. to consider the above Act, when the following resolutions were passed:— 1. That in the opinion of this Meeting it will be highly antagonistic to the interests of agriculture in Wairau Yalley to have game birds and animals (such as are named in Schedule IY to the Protection of Animals Act, 1867) turned at large in this vicinity, as they would trespass upon cultivated lands and become great cause of injury to the crops. 2. That it is highly necessary for every cultivator of the soil in this district to have a right to shoot any wild birds that may be found injuring their crops, at any period from sowing to harvest time, without license from the public authorities. 3. That as the Act entitled the Protection of Animals Act, 1867, is now law in New Zealand, this Meeting feel it their duty to present to the Governor of this Colony their humble petition, praying his Excellency to rescind the operations of the Act in the electoral district of Wairau Yalley, according to sections lO and 12 of this Act; and that a Committee of three persons bo appointed to draw up such petition, and also, to convene a public meeting to sanction it.
